Description

Telecoop is a French cooperative mobile operator, founded in 2020, whose plans encourage people to use less data and keep their phone longer. It uses Orange’s 4G network, and it is an alternative to the large operators that push for ever more data, 5G and frequent phone upgrades.

Telecoop is a cooperative of collective interest (SCIC) with about 2,400 member-owners in 2026: customers, volunteers, partners, employees and founders. A share costs €100 and gives one vote, there are no dividends, and since 2025 its ESUS social-enterprise status gives members a 25 % tax reduction if they keep their shares five years. It had 10,000 lines in February 2025 and about a dozen employees. It belongs to the Licoornes group of cooperatives with Enercoop, La Nef, Mobicoop and others, and works with Commown and Fairphone in the FairTEC alliance. It has said no to 5G.

All plans are without commitment (checked November 2026). The Forfait Sobriété costs €10 a month with 100 MB, plus €2 per extra GB; the Forfait Engagé charges €14 to €20 a month depending on use, up to 80 GB; the Forfait Transition costs €20 for 20 GB and includes €30 a year towards repairing the phone. Calls and texts are unlimited in France and the EU. According to Telecoop, its customers use on average 2.8 GB a month and keep their phone 3.9 years, against 2.5 years nationally, by their own account.

Strengths

  • A cooperative owned by its customers and staff, with one member, one vote and no dividends.
  • Plans built to use less: from €10 a month, paying only for the data used.
  • Orange’s 4G network, and €30 a year towards repairs in the Transition plan.

Weaknesses

  • Mobile only: no home internet box, and no 5G.
  • For heavy data users the €20 plans cost more than low-cost offers with more data.
  • The figures on longer phone use come from customers’ own answers, not from an independent study.

Who it is for

People in France who use their phone moderately, want to keep it longer and would like their operator to be a cooperative.
