Description
Love Food Hate Waste is the UK campaign against household food waste run by the charity WRAP, with a portion planner, an A–Z of how to store each food and a fridge temperature tool, free on its website.
It was first launched in the UK in 2007. WRAP, the registered charity behind it (no. 1159512, based in Banbury), also runs Food Waste Action Week every March; the 2026 edition was from 9 to 15 March. WRAP now licenses the brand to partners in Australia, Canada, the Czech Republic, Hungary, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Scotland and Slovakia.
WRAP’s Food Waste Action Week page says UK households throw away 4.4 million tonnes of edible food a year, worth £17.5 billion, causing 16 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions; another WRAP page gives 4.7 million tonnes for all household food waste. For 2021, WRAP put the cost at about £250 per person, or about £1,000 for a household of four, and the amount at 76 kg per person, 9 kg more than in 2018 but 15.5 kg less than in 2007.
Strengths
- The portion planner and the storage A–Z give practical answers on how much to cook and how to keep each food, for free.
- It is run by a registered charity that sells no food or kitchen products of its own.
- Food Waste Action Week each March gives councils, schools and shops a common date and material for local campaigns.
Weaknesses
- WRAP’s figures put waste per person in 2021 higher than in 2018, so the campaign has not reversed the trend.
- Two WRAP pages give different totals, 4.4 and 4.7 million tonnes, without saying which year each describes.
- The tools only help households, while much food is also wasted earlier, on farms, in factories and in shops.
Who it is for
Households in the UK who find food going off in the fridge or leftovers going in the bin, and want quick answers on portions and storage.
