Description

The Wohnprojekte-Portal is a free German directory of about 890 co-housing projects and groups, run by the non-profit Stiftung trias, where people can find a shared housing project with room for them or the people to start one.

The foundation, based in Hattingen in the Ruhr and set up in 2002, has run the portal since 2009. Stiftung trias works on land, ecology and shared living: it buys plots, takes them off the speculative market and lets housing projects use them under a heritable building right (Erbbaurecht), which it has done for more than 54 projects. It is funded by more than 250 donors, by the portal’s own count.

The search covers about 887 entries and can be filtered by type (completed project, project group, project being founded, neighbourhood, property), by postcode and radius, and by groups that are looking for new members or have homes to offer now. There is also an interactive map. Searching and reading the wiki need no account. Registering is free, and so is entering a project or a housing wish; only property offers and entries as an adviser are paid, at prices the pages read don’t give. The wiki explains legal forms for housing projects, such as cooperatives, associations, GbR partnerships and limited companies, as well as building rights and rental models.

Strengths

  • It is free to search, to register and to list a project, and it is run by a non-profit foundation, not an estate agent.
  • Filters show groups that are looking for new members or have homes available now, near a chosen postcode.
  • The wiki explains the legal forms and building rights a new group has to choose between.

Weaknesses

  • Entries are written by the groups themselves, and the portal doesn’t say how often they are checked, so some may be out of date.
  • Prices for property offers and adviser entries aren’t on the pages read.
  • Its own figures don’t quite match: 885 projects on the home page, 887 entries in the search.

Who it is for

People in Germany who want to live in a co-housing project, older people looking for a shared home, and groups that need members, land or advice to get started.
