Description
Solidarités International is a French humanitarian NGO, founded in 1980, that brings drinking water, sanitation and hygiene to people hit by wars and disasters, along with food aid and shelter. Water, sanitation and hygiene make up about half of its spending. It holds the Don en Confiance label, and donors in France can deduct most of their gift from their income tax.
In 2024 it worked in 26 countries with 2,310 national and 326 international staff, and helped 4.38 million people. Its accounts, audited by ACA Nexia, show 173.4 M€ spent, of which 93.2 % went to the field. Most of the money comes from institutions such as the UN, the EU and governments; gifts from the public were 7.0 M€, from about 48,000 donors. Since 2022 it has also worked in France, in Mayotte.
Donations can be one-off or monthly, online, by cheque or by text message. The NGO says 75 % of a gift is deductible up to 2,000 €, then 66 %, so 20 € a month costs 5 € after tax (checked November 2026). US aid cuts in 2025 forced it to end programmes in six countries and to cut staff, according to Carenews.
Strengths
- More than 93 % of its spending goes to field programmes, in audited accounts checked by Don en Confiance.
- It specialises in water and sanitation in crises, where a borehole or latrines prevent cholera and other diseases.
- Monthly gifts from the public give it money that isn’t tied to one donor’s priorities.
Weaknesses
- About two thirds of its budget comes from institutional donors, which made it vulnerable to the US aid cuts of 2025.
- The 75 % tax rate depends on the yearly finance law, so donors should check their tax receipt.
- Its budget is falling, from 190 M€ in 2023 to a forecast of 132 M€ for 2026, with programmes closed.
Who it is for
Donors in France who want to fund drinking water and sanitation in emergencies through an audited NGO, and who can give regularly.
