Description

The Que Choisir mutuelle comparator is the health insurance comparison tool of Que Choisir Ensemble, the French consumer association formerly called UFC-Que Choisir. It ranks complementary health insurance (mutuelle) offers by price and by what they reimburse, takes no money from insurers and sells no contact details.

For 2026 it covers 72 mutuelles and insurers in mainland France and compares the reimbursements of 462 offers. The association collects the prices every year from the insurers and through mystery shopping, in nine cities from Arras to Marseille and for eight health profiles. Users pick a profile (student, parent or retired, alone or as a couple, with low or high spending on glasses, dental care and hearing aids) and enter a postcode; the tool then uses the prices of the closest of the nine cities. Each offer gets a rating for optics, dental care, hospital, routine care, pharmacy and hearing, and one for value for money.

Commercial comparison sites are paid by the insurers they list, often per contact passed on to a call centre. This form asks for no name, phone number or e-mail address. When the association opened it to everyone for a week in March 2024, its examples included a 75-year-old in Paris who could pay €70 a month for basic cover instead of €141.

Strengths

  • No payment from insurers and no commercial use of personal data: the form asks only for a profile and a postcode.
  • Compares what each offer pays back for glasses, dental care, hearing aids and hospital stays, not only the monthly price.
  • Prices are collected again each year, from the insurers and by mystery shopping, for 462 offers in 2026.

Weaknesses

  • Prices come from nine sample cities and fixed profiles, so a real quote can differ, as the association itself warns.
  • Alsace-Moselle is left out, along with contracts reserved to one profession or tied to a bank account at the insurer.
  • The page asks visitors to subscribe or log in, and the tool has been opened to everyone only for short periods, such as one week in 2024.

Who it is for

Students, retired people and parents in mainland France who buy their own mutuelle, without a company contract, and want to compare offers without being called by brokers.
