Description
“Is private health insurance worth it?” is a free guide from MoneyHelper, the money guidance service of the UK government’s Money and Pensions Service. It helps people decide whether they need private medical insurance at all, and it has nothing to sell.
The Money and Pensions Service is an arm’s-length public body sponsored by the Department for Work and Pensions. It is funded by levies on the financial services industry and on pension schemes, collected through the Financial Conduct Authority, and it launched MoneyHelper in 2021 by merging the Money Advice Service, The Pensions Advisory Service and Pension Wise.
The guide starts from free NHS treatment and treats private cover as a personal choice that pays off in some situations only. It warns that premiums are high and go up every year and with age, that pre-existing and chronic conditions are usually excluded, and that debts with no savings behind them come first. It also points out that some employers offer group cover, cheaper than a policy bought alone. Other MoneyHelper guides cover dental insurance, travel insurance with a medical condition and insurance for the self-employed.
Strengths
- Free guidance paid for by an industry levy, with no commission on what readers end up buying.
- Asks first whether cover is needed at all, given the NHS, and puts paying off debts before premiums.
- Linked guides on dental insurance, travel cover with a medical condition and cover for the self-employed.
Weaknesses
- General guidance only: it doesn’t compare insurers, policies or prices.
- It names no insurer, so readers who decide to buy still have to find a broker or an insurer on their own.
Who it is for
People in the UK wondering whether private health insurance is worth the money, before they give their details to a broker or a comparison site.
