Description
momox is a Berlin company that buys used books, CDs, DVDs, games and clothes from private people and resells them online, in Germany through its shop medimops and in France through momox shop. Buying second-hand media this way is an alternative to buying them new.
Christian Wegner started it in 2004 as a one-man business and set up momox GmbH in 2006. Since 2019 the Norwegian private-equity investor Verdane has been the majority owner; the company is now momox SE, with €393.5 million in revenue and 2,340 employees in 2025. It sells mainly in Germany, France, Austria, Italy and Spain, and says it had about 45 million customers in 2024 and had bought and resold more than 400 million items in twenty years.
Sellers scan a barcode in the momox app and get a price set by an algorithm, which can change from day to day. momox pays the postage and pays out after checking the items, usually within a week; rejected items bring nothing, and the seller chooses between recycling, donation or return. In the shops, items are graded by condition; on the French shop, books start at €0.99 and delivery is free above €19. In 2021 the TV programme WISO found items declared unsaleable later on sale at medimops. Since October 2025 workers at the Leipzig warehouse have gone on strike for a collective agreement, which the company refuses.
Strengths
- Books, discs and games get a second life, at prices well below new.
- Selling takes a barcode scan, a fixed offer and a parcel sent free of charge.
- A large stock graded by condition, with titles that are hard to find at a flea market.
Weaknesses
- Buy-back prices are set by an algorithm and are often only a few cents an item.
- Owned by a private-equity investor, and Leipzig warehouse staff have been striking since 2025 for a collective agreement it refuses.
- Rejected items earn the seller nothing, and a 2021 TV report found some of them later offered for sale.
Who it is for
Readers and gamers who buy several items at once and want specific titles second-hand, and people clearing their shelves who prefer one parcel to selling item by item. Sellers who want more than a few cents per book will do better at a flea market or with classified ads.
