Description

MAIF is a French mutual insurer, owned by its 4.2 million members, that insures homes, cars, bikes and borrowers. It became a société à mission in 2020 and gives 10 % of its profit to environmental projects each year.

It was founded in 1934 by teachers and has been run since 2009 by Pascal Demurger, who co-chairs the Mouvement Impact France. In 2024 it had a turnover of 5 bn € and a net profit of 73 M€, so about 7 M€ went to this “dividende écologique”. MAIF says 97 % of its investments are classed as socially responsible and that their carbon footprint fell by 38 % between 2020 and 2024. An independent auditor checked in 2026 that it had met its mission commitments for 2024 and 2025, but the climate figures are MAIF’s own.

MAIF publishes no prices online, and quotes are made for each customer. An insurance comparison site estimates about 20 € a month for a tenant in a 60 m² flat (checked November 2026). Premiums rose by 8 % in 2025, and some members report larger rises on home insurance. In UFC-Que Choisir’s 2025 survey of policyholders who had made a claim, MAIF ranked first for home and for car insurance.

Strengths

  • UFC-Que Choisir’s 2025 survey of policyholders who had a claim ranked it first for both home and car insurance.
  • As a mutual it has no shareholders to pay, and 10 % of its profit funds environmental projects.
  • An independent auditor checks that it keeps the commitments it took on as a société à mission.

Weaknesses

  • Premiums are usually higher than at low-cost online insurers, and they rose by 8 % in 2025.
  • Its investment and climate figures are self-reported, and no NGO has assessed them in detail.
  • Online reviews are mixed, with complaints about slow handling of complex claims.

Who it is for

Households in France who want home and car insurance from a mutual with good claims service, and who accept paying more than the cheapest online offer.
