Description

Lumni is the free, ad-free educational platform of French public broadcasting: videos, quizzes, games, articles and podcasts for learning and revising school subjects, from nursery school to the baccalauréat. It is an alternative to paid tutoring, revision books and homework sites funded by advertising.

France Télévisions launched it in November 2019, replacing its Francetv éducation service of 2015. It is made with the INA, Radio France, Arte, France Médias Monde, TV5 Monde, the media-education centre Clemi and the Canopé network, with the support of the Ministries of Education and Culture. Content is sorted by class and subject, with revision files and corrected past papers for the brevet and the bac. Since a 2023 redesign it has used teacher-influencers and comedians as presenters, and it posts on TikTok and other networks. A free account keeps favourites and progress.

Teachers have Lumni Enseignement, launched in 2022, with resources from about thirty institutions such as the Centre Pompidou, the Philharmonie de Paris and the INA; Lumni Étudiant, launched in 2021, covers higher education. During the 2020 lockdowns the site had more than 1.8 million unique visitors a month, and 1.4 million in October 2023.

Strengths

  • Free and ad-free, with content made by public broadcasters and checked by teachers and experts.
  • Corrected past papers and revision files for the brevet and bac can replace a revision book.
  • Short videos, quizzes, games, revision sheets and podcasts, on the site, in an app and on social networks.

Weaknesses

  • The account goes through France Télévisions, which collects some personal data.
  • Videos can be removed without notice, and some are blocked outside France.
  • There is no teacher follow-up: pupils revise alone, with no one to answer their questions.

Who it is for

Pupils in the French school system who want to go over a topic or revise for the brevet or bac without paying for private lessons, and teachers looking for videos to show in class.
