Description

Khan Academy is a US non-profit organisation that offers free courses with videos and exercises, mainly in mathematics and science, but also computing, economics, history and test preparation, from primary school to university level.

Sal Khan began it in 2004 by tutoring a cousin online and set it up as a non-profit in 2008. It is funded mostly by donations from foundations and companies, among them the Gates Foundation, Google and AT&T; its revenue was $28 million in 2019. The platform is fully available in about 15 languages, including French and German, and partly in 28 more, and it carries no advertising. Learners progress at their own pace, and teachers and parents can follow their progress.

Since 2023 it has also offered Khanmigo, an AI tutor based on OpenAI’s GPT-4 that guides learners without giving them the answers. It is free for teachers in eligible countries, but learners and parents must pay, and the paid version is only open to adults in the United States. A Wall Street Journal test in February 2024 found that it made basic calculation errors.

Strengths

  • Free for everyone, without advertising.
  • Very good mathematics courses, with many exercises and hints.
  • Available in many languages.

Weaknesses

  • The French and German versions have fewer courses than the English one.
  • An American organisation: the account and data are in the United States.
  • The AI tutor Khanmigo is paid for learners and only sold in the United States.

Who it is for

Pupils, students and adults who want to learn or revise mathematics and science.
