Description
KeePassXC is a free, open-source password manager for Windows, macOS and Linux. It keeps logins, passwords, passkeys and notes in an encrypted file, in the common KeePass (KDBX) format, opened with a master password and, if wanted, a key file or a YubiKey. There is no account, no subscription and no advertising.
It generates passwords, stores two-factor codes, flags weak passwords and those found in known data leaks, fills forms in the main browsers through an extension, and can act as an SSH agent. It began as a community fork of KeePassX and is published under the GPLv3. In November 2025 the French cybersecurity agency ANSSI gave version 2.7.9 a security certification (CSPN), valid until 2028, after an evaluation by Synacktiv; an independent code audit had been completed in January 2023. Version 2.8.0 (October 2026) added Auto-Type on Wayland and syncing with remote copies through external tools.
There is no official mobile app: on a phone you use compatible apps such as KeePassDX, KeePass2Android, KeePassium or Strongbox.
Strengths
- Completely free, with no account or subscription.
- Passwords go through no server: everything stays in a file you control.
- Reports weak passwords and those found in known data leaks.
Weaknesses
- No built-in cloud sync: the file has to be shared through a cloud folder or another tool.
- No official phone app.
- A rather technical interface with many settings.
Who it is for
People who want to stop reusing the same password everywhere, without paying a subscription or trusting a company with their data.
