Description
Karte von morgen (“map of tomorrow”) is an open map of sustainable initiatives and businesses: organic shops, repair cafés, community gardens, cooperatives, sharing places, places to eat and more, in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and, with fewer entries, worldwide.
It is run by the association Ideen³ e.V. with the companies slowtec and Reiner IT-Systems; a first prototype was shown at the Degrowth conference in Leipzig in 2014. Anyone can add or edit an entry without an account. Local volunteers called “regional pilots” and national “topic pilots” moderate the map and can archive entries for organisations that no longer exist. The data sit in the open database OpenFairDB under the ODbL licence and can be reused with attribution. Towns and networks embed the map on their websites or get their own subdomain, and some cities print paper maps, funded at first by Engagement Global and the local council.
The project lives on donations and contributions, and there is no free map API for third parties.
Strengths
- Shows sustainable places near you on one map.
- Open data and open-source software, run by a non-profit.
- Anyone can add and correct entries, without an account.
Weaknesses
- Coverage is uneven, mostly in German-speaking countries, and some entries are out of date.
- Search needs exact place names, and some features, such as subscribing to an area, are unavailable.
Who it is for
