Description

Jean Bouteille is a French system of reusable deposit glass bottles for liquids sold loose in shops, such as oil, vinegar, wine, beer and detergents: customers fill the bottle from a dispenser and bring it back to swap for a clean one.

The company was founded in Lille in March 2014 by Gérard Bellet and raised money through crowdfunding on KissKissBankBank in 2014 and 2019. It supplies shops with the bottles and the dispensers, and since 2021 the bottles have been washed by its partner Uzaje in the Nord region. In 2020 it co-founded WeBulk with Ultéria. Its site says it works with more than 1,000 partner shops, among them organic shops such as Biocoop.

The company later entered a court safeguard procedure, which was converted into liquidation; the Jean Bouteille brand and its catalogue of liquid products and containers were then taken over by Adélia Nature, a French company linked to the Belgian bulk-goods firm Natur’Inov. The founder said 86 % of jobs were saved and the bottle workshop stayed in Lille. The articles found don’t give the year, and the newest dated content on jeanbouteille.fr is a blog post from July 2022. The deposit amount isn’t shown on the pages read.

Strengths

  • Glass bottles are washed and refilled many times instead of throwing away a plastic bottle after each purchase.
  • Shoppers can buy only the quantity they need, from oil to washing-up liquid, in the same bottle system.
  • The bottles are washed in the region by a specialist partner, so the loop stays local.

Weaknesses

  • The company went through liquidation and was taken over, and its website shows no news since 2022.
  • It only works where a partner shop has the dispensers, and the deposit price isn’t published on the site.
  • The 1,000-shop figure is the company’s own and couldn’t be checked on its map.

Who it is for

Shoppers in France whose organic or bulk shop has Jean Bouteille dispensers and who want to buy oil, vinegar or detergent without throwing away a bottle each time.
