Description
L’Heureux Cyclage is the French network of community bike workshops: associations where you repair your own bike with their tools and the advice of volunteers or staff, for a small membership fee.
The network was born in October 2008 at a meeting of workshops in Dijon, signed its charter in Marseille in 2009 and became an association in 2010; it is based in Grenoble. The charter’s aims are to encourage everyday cycling, put neglected bikes back on the road, reuse parts and materials, and share mechanical know-how. It now brings together more than 180 associations, and its map lists 516 workshops in France (October 2026), overseas included. Already in 2012 the workshops had 25,000 members.
Membership of a workshop usually costs 10 to 20 € a year. Parts, often taken from abandoned bikes, are paid separately, and many workshops also sell refurbished second-hand bikes. A 2017 ADEME study found that the workshops help build a local cycling community.
Strengths
- Tools and workstations all year for 10 to 20 €.
- Reused parts: between 154 and 283 tonnes a year across the network.
- A map of more than 500 workshops.
Weaknesses
- Workshops only open during their sessions, often a few half-days a week.
- You repair the bike yourself: you can’t drop it off.
- Prices and opening hours vary and are not on the network’s site.
Who it is for
Everyday cyclists, students and people on tight budgets who want to maintain their bike cheaply and learn how.
