Description
Grüne Erde is an Austrian maker of natural mattresses, beds and wood furniture, with home textiles and cosmetics. Its mattresses are made by hand in Upper Austria from wool, natural latex, coconut fibre and hemp, and carry the GOTS organic textile label.
The company was founded in 1983 as a small family business in Scharnstein, in the Almtal valley, and has belonged since 1993 to Reinhard Kepplinger and Kuno Haas. It is a GmbH. About 3,200 customers had lent it around €16 million through a participation scheme by 2023. It makes around 13,000 mattresses a year in its Almtal workshop and in 2003 bought a joinery in Carinthia for its furniture.
Wood furniture has a 20-year guarantee and mattresses 10 years, which cover repair or replacement, and spare parts are kept for most furniture. In November 2026 a 90 × 200 cm mattress cost between €848 and €1,398. Grüne Erde has its own stores in Austria and Germany and ships directly to Austria, Germany and Switzerland. Parcels cost €5.95, and furniture sent by freight costs 3.5 % of the order, between €65 and €490.
Strengths
- Mattresses are made in its own Austrian workshop from wool, latex and plant fibres, with the GOTS label.
- The 20-year guarantee on wood furniture and 10 years on mattresses are long for the trade, and spare parts are kept.
- The company has had the same two private owners since 1993 and part of its financing comes from customers.
Weaknesses
- A single mattress costs well over €800, and freight for furniture adds up to €490.
- Natural latex and coconut fibre come from Southeast Asia, and the site doesn’t say where all the furniture is now made.
- ÖKO-TEST rated a Grüne Erde cot mattress only “befriedigend” in 2022, for incomplete instructions and wrong dimensions.
Who it is for
Households in Austria, Germany and Switzerland who want a mattress or bed without synthetic foam and can pay for it once, for many years of use.
