Description
Ethiquable is a French worker cooperative (Scop) from Fleurance, in the Gers, that sells organic fair trade food: chocolate, coffee, tea, juice, rice, sugar, spices and snacks, bought from cooperatives of small farmers in Latin America, Africa and Asia, and from French farmers’ cooperatives too.
Founded in 2003, it is owned by its employees: in 2025, 126 of its 168 staff were members, and turnover reached €93 million. It works with about a hundred producer cooperatives, nearly 49,000 farmers in 29 countries by its own count, and sells some 300 products, all organic and fair trade, in about 10,000 supermarkets and specialist shops in France. Its French range, formerly sold as “Paysans d’ici”, comes from 1,200 organic farmers in 14 cooperatives.
Chocolate makes up half of sales. Since 2021 the bars have been made in its own factory in Fleurance, a €20 million building powered partly by solar panels and a long-term contract with Enercoop. The cooperative says it usually pays $4,000 to $4,500 a tonne for cocoa, above the market price. When world cocoa prices climbed from $2,500 to more than $10,000 a tonne, it borrowed €7.6 million in 2025 to keep pre-financing its partner cooperatives, and raised its chocolate prices by about 10 %.
Strengths
- A cooperative owned by its employees that buys from small farmers’ cooperatives.
- Organic and fair trade, sold in ordinary supermarkets across France.
- A page on each producer group, and cocoa bought above the market price.
Weaknesses
- More expensive than the cheapest brands, and chocolate rose by about 10 % during the cocoa crisis.
- Coffee, cocoa and tea travel a long way from the producing countries.
Who it is for
Shoppers in France who want fair trade products in their usual supermarket.
