Description
Écotable is a French label and guide for restaurants that cook with organic, local and seasonal produce, with three levels from “transition started” to “an example for all” and a map of about 300 labelled restaurants.
Écotable SAS is a Paris company that calls itself part of the social and solidarity economy. Restaurants first get a Resto-Score, an environmental rating based on a questionnaire of at most an hour and an analysis of their purchase invoices by Écotable’s team. Level 1 of the label requires a Resto-Score of A, B or C and at least 15 % of products from organic farming or sustainable supply chains; levels 2 and 3 require A or B, and level 3 at least 50 %. The label page says verification is changing to add an independent certification body, in line with the EU rules on green claims.
Restaurants pay a subscription, from €40 a month for the Découverte plan to €120 for the Complète plan, with a 12-month commitment, and label verification is priced on quote. For diners the guide is free: the website lists about 300 restaurants with a map. Co-founder Fanny Giansetto said in 2023 that the label rewards restaurants that already do well but doesn’t help those with the greatest impact.
Strengths
- The criteria are published and graded, with a minimum share of organic or sustainable products at each level.
- The Resto-Score is based on the restaurant’s actual purchase invoices, not only on its own statements.
- For diners the map of about 300 restaurants is free.
Weaknesses
- The restaurants pay Écotable for the subscription, and checks have been done by Écotable’s own team so far.
- Its co-founder said the label mainly rewards restaurants that are already virtuous.
- With about 300 restaurants for the whole of France, many towns have none.
Who it is for
Diners in France who want to choose a restaurant that buys organic, local and seasonal produce, and restaurant owners looking for a structured way to improve.
