Description
The Deutscher Mieterbund (DMB) is the umbrella organisation of more than 300 local tenants’ associations (Mietervereine) in Germany. Members of a local association get personal legal advice on rent increases, service-charge statements, deposits, repairs, rent reductions and notices to quit, and the association writes to the landlord on their behalf.
The DMB has existed for more than a hundred years. Its local associations are legally independent and grouped in 15 regional federations, with more than 500 advice centres, about 1,300 staff and 2,500 volunteers. Some 1.25 million households are members, about 3 million tenants. The work is funded by membership fees alone, without public money. At national level the DMB lobbies on tenancy law, for example for a stricter rent cap (Mietpreisbremse) backed by fines.
Fees are set locally. In Berlin, membership costs €132 a year, or €78 on a low income, plus a €7.50 joining fee, for at least 24 months (checked November 2026). Most associations include insurance for court costs through the DMB’s own insurer, founded in 1983; in Berlin it covers disputes that arise after a three-month waiting period. German law allows individual advice for members only, but the DMB website gives everyone free information and a service-charge check.
Strengths
- Advice from lawyers, and letters to the landlord written by the association, for a yearly fee.
- Court costs are usually covered by insurance included in the membership.
- Members can have their yearly service-charge statement checked, and a free online tool compares costs with the national average.
Weaknesses
- Members are bound for a minimum period, 24 months in Berlin, and legal cover only starts after a waiting period.
- Fees, services and quality differ from one local association to the next.
- The insurance covers court costs only, not outside lawyers hired by the member.
Who it is for
Tenants in Germany, especially before signing a lease, after a rent increase or when a service-charge statement looks wrong.
