Description

The Energie-Info comparator is the official comparison tool of France’s energy ombudsman (médiateur national de l’énergie). It lists the electricity and gas offers of every supplier and ranks them by their estimated cost for the first year. It is free, collects no personal data and passes no one on to a supplier.

The ombudsman is an independent public authority with no contract, shareholding or payment linking it to suppliers. The comparator has existed since 2009, and the 2019 energy and climate law made it the official one: every supplier must list all its offers, except dynamic-price ones, and keep them up to date. In 2020 that meant about 400 offers, of which some 80 for electricity and 50 for gas were compared for a typical household.

Users enter their postcode, the energy and their consumption. Offers can be sorted by cost with or without promotions, by supplier or by share of renewable energy, and filtered by regulated, indexed or fixed-price tariffs and green offers. Each supplier gets one to four stars from the number of complaints referred to the ombudsman per 100,000 contracts; in 2024 the average was 32. Use of the comparator rose by 25 % in 2025. People without internet can call the free line 0 800 112 212, Monday to Friday.

Strengths

  • Every supplier must list all its offers, and none pays to be listed or ranked first.
  • No personal data collected, so no sales calls from suppliers afterwards.
  • Stars show which suppliers end up in dispute with their customers most often.

Weaknesses

  • The cost shown is an estimate for the first year at today’s prices; promotions end and market prices move.
  • Dynamic-price offers are left out of the main comparison.
  • The tool doesn’t switch for anyone: the chosen supplier has to be contacted directly.

Who it is for

Households in France on the regulated tariff or an old offer who want to see, bill in hand, what they would pay elsewhere.
